Organize and Tidy Your Hallway in 6 Easy Steps
Halls are just about the most neglected area of people’s homes — even though they are the first room that anyone sees. My small hallway is home to a collection of cobwebs, an untidy pile of phone directories that I rarely use, and a pile of old shoes. So I set about giving it a good old tidy-up and a mini-makeover. Here are a few tips I’d like to share.
1 Pale and interesting
If your hall is small or narrow, paint it in a pale color. White and off-whites are great as are cool colors like pale blues and greens. Another trick to make your hall seem bigger — and one that is often overlooked — is to paint the wall and ceiling in the same shade.
2 On the floor
If your hall is on the small side, keep the flooring pale as well as the walls. It’s a good idea to have an indoor door mat as well as one outside, to collect the dirt and moisture that your outdoor mat hasn’t managed to trap. My advice is to get one that matches your decoration theme. That old gray ribbed thing just won’t do — even if it does do the job. In the UK, check out stores like Dunelm Mill, John Lewis and IKEA for some good ideas.
3 Mirror, mirror on the wall
It’s a design cliche, I know. But a big mirror on the wall really will help your hall look bigger.
4 Keep it simple
Halls work best when they’re kept simple and clutter free. Take a look around. Get rid of the rubbish and remove anything that you no longer like or is not useful.
5 Invest in great storage
I have now banned all shoes from my hallway. An attractive small rack with a few pairs of nice shoes is probably fine — but not dodgy slippers and muddy trainers.
For starters, go through all your shoes and ditch all the unworn pairs and ones that are only worn occasionally (they can be stored in the bedroom).
If you have a bit of space, buy a hinged wooden or basket weave box — or perhaps a bench with a hinged lid. If you are really short of floor space, a wall-mounted shoe cabinet will do the trick. IKEA do several, to suit all budgets and most tastes.
For coats and hats, the solution is pretty similar. Remove everything that is only worn occasionally to the bedroom. Personally, unless you’ve got loads of space, I’d avoid a freestanding coat and hat stand — it will take up too much valuable space. Treat yourself to a nice set of wall hooks instead. If you have no room, a unit with a row of hooks and a shelf above can work really well — you can use the shelf to hold boxes or baskets for gloves, hats and scarves.
If you have room for a small console table, try to find one with useful drawers or a cupboard underneath.
6 Don’t bring the outside in!
Buy a good outdoor door mat to prevent dirt and moisture being dragged into your newly revamped hallway. Some of this is a matter of personal taste and you will want to combine practicality with good looks. Check out the shops and see what there is around. If you are going for a natural coir mat, remember that although these remove dirt quite well, they’re not very good at soaking up moisture — quite a major consideration if you live in the UK!
Talking of outsides, don’t forget to make sure that your front door and the area just around it look good. Broken bells and blown about pizza delivery fliers are unlikely to impress anyone. If possible, have an easy-to-maintain plant or two around. A couple of pots either side of the doorway always look good.
Easy cleaning
Now that your hall has been de-cluttered and transformed, it should be really easy to keep it clean and cobweb free. If you have a garden, pick a few flowers or sprigs and arrange them in a vase on the hallway table or shelf. Alternatively, treat yourself to a bunch of flowers or a pot plant.
Now you can start organizing the rest of the house!
